The HMAS Sydney Memorial has become a Geraldton landmark and a highly sought after national, and even international, tourist attraction. Overlooking the city on its highest peak, Mt Scott, this moving tribute to the 645 men lost on HMAS Sydney in World War II, is also a triumph of community spirit. The Memorial was a project undertaken by one of Geraldton's three Rotary Clubs. While supported by local and state government, it succeeded because of community drive, perseverance and the generosity of local business people. The size, beauty and reverence achieved is now a telling testament of the skills, talents and cohesiveness of the Geraldton community.
Maritime history has a passionate place in the heart of many Geraldton residents. The famous Batavia mutiny in 1629 and the tales of many other shipwrecks off the coast are told in the Western Australian Museum Geraldton. Located on the waterfront of the Batavia Coast Marina, the Museum is a cultural hub for Geraldton, relating stories of the Mid West region and hosting many travelling exhibitions for residents to enjoy.
This passion for maritime history was demonstrated with the Geraldton community, once again, pulling together to build a replica of the long boat from the Batavia. This project combined the skills and talents of students at the Central West College of TAFE with the financial and community support of local businesses and organisations dedicated to the project.
The pioneering spirit of the region is further captured at the Central Greenough Historic Settlement, with an Interpretive Centre and charmingly restored buildings relating the stories of white settlement and its impact on the Indigenous Yamaji community.
Geraldton offers much to the arts enthusiasts with a range of Galleries, performance companies and opportunities for some outstanding cottage industries.
The Geraldton Regional Art Gallery displays work by local artists and travelling exhibitions with smaller galleries, including the Marra Aboriginal Gallery, also offering a taste of local artistic talent.
The Queens Park Theatre stages major travelling plays and performances while also setting the scene for industry and commercial launches and conferences.
For those more interested in participating than viewing, the Theatre Eight performance company provides a creative outlet while local music and dance schools perform in festivals and community concerts.
